With much of Auckland’s growth resulting from suburban development, Auckland’s current predominant housing type is standalone and duplex housing. This guidance covers the elements that should be considered when designing a detached home, including form and appearance, and functionality.
Standalone housing, also referred to as “detached housing”, refers to individual dwellings not connected to any neighbouring dwellings.
The provision of standalone housing creates a lower density than other housing typologies, however standalone housing may be necessary in rural areas or where heritage or other overlays impact a site.
In this section we provide guidance on how to design standalone housing with good liveability outcomes for residents and contribute to vibrant and safe streets and neighbourhoods.
