We have seen a growing trend of poor practices on site leading to concrete leaking into the stormwater network through holes in pipes or unsealed lateral under slabs and causing a significant disruption and cost to the stormwater network to remove the concrete.
Developers in Auckland are inadvertently allowing concrete to enter old uncapped laterals which subsequently flow into stormwater mains leading to significant negative ecological impacts. Past events show that the wastewater network is subject to the same risks. In 2009 a developer working on Cheshire street accidentally allowed concrete to fill the local wastewater network through an abandoned private wastewater lateral. Slurry nearly flowed into the Orakei transmission main near the Parnell train station. The volume of concrete was too significant to remove, so a new wastewater line had to be installed.
This is a high risk issue for Watercare and Healthy Waters.
