Case Study: Turner Whanau PapakāingaPrint

The Turner whanau redevelop their traditional quarter acre property, creating a multi-generational whare that accommodates four generations of their whanau under one roof.

At the time this case study was prepared, the Turners’ eight bedroom whare was home to five family units and 19 whanau members, with room for more available.

The whanau's aspiration was to create a papakāinga that catered to their evolving requirements - a home for their tamariki and mokopuna to grow up in, a base for the whanau business and, in the future, a retirement home where Miriama and Hone's eight children could live together. The long term goal is to ensure the whanau will always have a tūrangawaewae, a place that draws them together and holds them together. Moving from general title to Māori title is part of the whanau long-term strategy for their papakāinga.

The key first step to the papakāinga's creation was the whanau coming together to create a guiding long term vision for the future. This vision arose out of principles and values collectively identified and developed by the whanau. The vision went on to inform the subsequent design of the whare and has been a key factor in the papakāinga’s ongoing success.
