Create a sense of community by clearly indicating public spaces and encouraging people to use them actively.

Environments that bring people together and give the community something to be proud of not only enrich the neighbourhood, but also are safer for everyone. Such spaces are likely to have more visitors, and members of a close community are more likely to keep an eye out for each other – both important factors in cultivating passive surveillance.

Creating semi-public spaces is helpful in increasing responsibility and guardianship of the environment. For example, when designing a communal space in an apartment or a neighbourhood, the space should consist of areas where neighbours can congregate and develop a sense of place. This will encourage them to care more about the space and strengthen their ownership over the space.
