  1. Consider lighting design that enhances character, usability and safety for communal areas after dark
  2. Design and specification of lighting fixtures and controls minimises ongoing energy use


Overview


Artificial lighting around entrances and in common areas should contribute to and provide for character, safety and usability without excessive energy use.​​


Better Design Practice

Provide good lighting levels in interior and exterior communal areas to improve safety.​

Provide an even spread of lighting that illuminates all areas.​​

Reduce artificial lighting use and save energy by:

  • using natural lighting where possible;
  • providing a mix of lighting fixtures, including dimmable lighting, to allow for a range of light level requirements (for example, low background lighting supplemented by effect lighting as required);
  • using separate lighting circuits for flexibility of use;
  • using energy efficient lighting, such as LED or compact fluorescent lights, in common areas;
  • using motion sensor and/or timed switches in common areas, doorways, entrances, car parks, and for outdoor security lighting.

Provide safety signage and lighting that integrates with the building design.​

For additional character consider engaging a lighting designer to provide attractive exterior lighting around entrances and street facades.​
