Mechanised parking Print

Mechanised parking utilises automation technology to create more space-efficient parking.

The two most common types of mechanised parking are:
  • Stacking (one car elevated above the other, user operated)
  • Automated (driver deposits their car, an automatic machine then collects and stores the car in a racking system).
Car stacker units can be an effective way of roughly doubling parking capacity by creating one additional space above every standard space. These units are particulaly suited to apartments allocated two spaces per dwelling, so that occupants are in control of both vehicles i.e. one car cannot ‘trap’ another.

Automated parking reduces or eliminates the required room for vehicle manoeuvring, standard head heights and access in and out of vehicles that is required in normal parking structures.

Mechanised parking will involve a maintenance programme and associated ongoing costs, typically borne by a body corporate or similar organisation. Be aware that as with any mechanised system there are potential operational issues that could cause hold-ups and backlogs; ensure a monitoring and support service is in place before the development opens.

Neighbourhood guidance
  • Mechanised car parking is suitable in most locations. It can be utilised as an efficient space saving solution in urban areas, but it also serves a purpose in long term or infrequent access scenarios such as airport parking.
  • Because of their size, car park stackers can be deployed in most situations and location should be no barrier.

Site guidance

Consider floor to ceiling height design - typical stackers will not fit within a minimum height parking level so be sure to plan ahead for future proofing.
