  • Users can easily locate entrance/exits or routes to them from all parking spaces
  • Signage is legible for both drivers and pedestrians

Overview

The internal environments of parking buildings are often repetitive, with few distinct points of reference. Similarly, extensive ranks of surface parking with no articulation can be disorienting and visually oppressive.

Creative signage solutions can help to create visual interest within a car parking environment. Bright and colourful labels and markings can be an inexpensive way to overcome the monotony of basic parking buildings, whilst a well-defined network of pedestrian linkages can help to enable wayfinding.

Clear and direct wayfinding helps patrons spend less time negotiating a carpark and more time shopping, dining, exercising or working.

Better Design Practice

Employ visual branding.
  • Mitigate the potentially homogenous interior of parking buildings with the use of colour. This can also assist in the provision of reference points or landmarks.
  • Employ differing paint schemes on different parking levels to provide distinction between floors and help drivers keep track of where they parked.

Use appropriately sized signage.

Make signage large and clear - remember it will be viewed at a distance from a moving vehicle. Drivers will be able to better negotiate the car park and keep traffic moving if they can give early attention to where they are going.

Use lighting effectively.
  • Combinations of lighting and colour can be used to highlight routes or key locations such as lifts or ramps.
  • Lighting can be employed beyond just functional performance and provides a good opportunity to create an interesting or appealing design element. Lighting designers can be engaged to provide creative design solutions for specific projects.

Employ smart signage.

Consider using car park counting signage. This informs drivers of the quantity and location of available spaces, directing them immediately to a free park. This speeds up traffic, saves drivers’ time and eliminates potential congestion caused by drivers hunting for empty spaces.
