Terraced housing space Print

Design Checklist

  1. The spatial arrangements of habitable rooms meets the needs of the intended number of occupants and considers possible furniture layouts
  2. Appropriate levels of storage space are provided
  3. Internal layouts allow for adaptability and changes in family circumstances over time
  4. The layout allows for a variety of household activities and occupants’ needs by considering requirements for individual rooms
The aim of this guidance is to promote functional and enjoyable terraced houses and to promote optimal (higher than minimum) sizes for the internal spaces.
The guidance provided below places the emphasis on getting the design and configuration (spatial layout) of the rooms, circulation space and private outdoor space right, as much as on establishing minimum sizes.  Terraced houses that exceed the minimum standards will always be encouraged.

The guidance describes the space requirements for each functional area of the home, for example living, sleeping, storage etc. The detailed design of each of these spaces can be resolved within the relevant room, however, the design should be considered in relation to the whole house

Best practice design should provide for homes which are flexible and adaptable over time.  Therefore where relevant, this section also incorporates Universal Design principles.   Universal Design refers to designs and spaces which are accessible to all.

In particular this guidance references the New Zealand Lifemark Standards which have been created to achieve adaptable, accessible design solutions.
