Design Checklist

  1. The landscape treatment integrates with and reflects the valued aspects of the character of the neighbourhood.

'Sense of place', or creating areas that are distinctive and have their own character, is a common aspiration but is often hard to achieve. The landscape and natural features of an area are an effective way of reflecting its character.

However, new developments can negatively impact the wider community and character of an area through the loss of mature trees. Poorly planned development can result in urban environments where existing trees are removed, and there is no room for large trees to grow.

Better Design Practice

Repeat or use any existing positive and valued landscape themes that characterise the neighbourhood to help integrate a new development into the area.

Focus on using native planting and trees that are common to the area. Use hard landscaping elements that are characteristic of the area. Retain and protect mature trees where possible.

Rules of Thumb

Provide enough space on site for at least one large tree which, when mature, is visible above the roofline of the building.
