Design Checklist

  1. The outdoor spaces are accessible and can be used by people of all ages and abilities

Overview

The outdoor spaces around the house should be accessible to a wide range of people. In particular, it should be easy for all users to get into and out of the house when accessing the deck or rear yard.

Better Design Practice

Make the entrance to outdoor spaces, in particular the primary outdoor space, as wide as possible.
This allows easy access to outdoor spaces by users with wheelchairs or other mobility equipment. To improve accessibility, minimise the use of steps and incorporate shallow-pitched ramps where required.

Provide a level threshold at the entrance points to outdoor spaces.
This allows easy access to outdoor spaces by users with wheelchairs or other mobility equipment. If this is not possible, ensure there is a maximum threshold of 20mm.

Entries with a level threshold need to be carefully designed with regards to drainage and shelter to ensure protection from the weather.

Rules of Thumb

The entrance path to the primary outdoor space should be at least 1200 mm wide.
