3Design private open spaces to be accessible to everyone

Design Checklist

  1. The spaces around the house are accessible to and can be used by people of all ages and abilities.

The areas around the house should be accessible to a wide range of people.

In particular, it should be as easy as possible to get into and out of the house, and to access the deck or rear yard.

Better Design Practice

Make the entrance path at least 1200mm wide. In order to provide maximum accessibility minimise the use of steps and use very shallow-pitched ramps where required.

Provide a level threshold at entry and exit points to the house, and between the house and the main private open space.

If this is not possible ensure there is a maximum threshold of 20mm. This will need to be carefully designed with drainage and shelter to ensure protection from the weather.
