- Parking under the house does not dominate the main view of the house from the street.
Garaging can sometimes be underneath the main part of the building, rather than to one side or behind. With this approach, there is a risk that the garage, not the house, becomes the main feature of the building at street level.
While this may not have a big impact on the appearance of the street if it applies to a single house, it can have a negative effect if it is repeated along neighbouring lots. However, in some situations parking under the house may be a good response, for example when there is a sloping site. To be successful, the house must be seen to be the main feature of the building, not the garage. This approach can also reduce the footprint of the house, reducing stormwater runoff and allowing for more open space.
