Perceptions of safety in town centresPrint

The CBD and the three other metropolitan centres in the Region were specifically examined to determine the level of safety perception during the day and night.  Unfortunately public confidence in safety generally drops in all those civic areas at night. A range of locations in these wider areas were associated with lower perceptions of safety after dark, such as Takapuna beach or particular locations in a shopping mall (e.g., a car park in a Westfield Mall). The main reason for such significant drop in the perception of safety is believed to be associated more with people's behaviour and attitudes, which usually starts changing prior to 10pm at night, rather than sole environmental factors.
