General perceptions of safetyPrint

A significant number (81%) of those surveyed rated the Auckland region as a place where they feel either "safe" or "very safe" from crime in general. Those who mentioned lower perceptions of safety were concerned with issues such as burglary, theft, assault, and mugging.

Almost two-third of the participants reported that they had not noticed any changes in the level of perceived safety in the Auckland region compared with the previous year. Although the survey was not exhaustive, the results suggested that there is a difference in perceived safety across the region.

Also, the results suggested that those who identified themselves as locals of a particular area tended to have a stronger perception of safety in that area when compared with those who didn't.

Demographics and group differences

Perceptions of safety from crime are different across different demographic groups. Those often standing out as being more likely than others to feel unsafe in a range of locations/situations include:
  • Women, particularly after dark;
  • 20 to 29 year olds – although this population cohort does have a markedly higher proportion of non-Europeans compared with other age groups this does not appear to be the main reason for this group feeling less safe than others. Whilst further work would be needed to determine the reasons, it is possible that high mobility and involvement in activities after dark together with their personal experience of crime (the highest victimisation rate of all age groups) are all factors leading many in this age group to feel unsafe;
  • Non Europeans – particularly Maori, Pacific, Indian and South Asians.
  • A recent experience of being a victim of crime tends to change the people’s views of how safe they feel. Those who have been victimised in the past are significantly more likely to report feeling unsafe in a wider range of locations and situations comparing with non-victims.
