The importance of the design processPrint

Parks are a part of the built environment within which we live, work and play. As parts of Auckland become more densely populated, private properties will have less open space, placing higher emphasis on quality design for public parks.

A good design process will ensure:

  • the values of our communities are considered
  • parks contribute positively to the experience of those using them
  • parks are vibrant, attractive and accessible to people of all ages and abilities
  • environmental qualities are protected and enhanced
  • heritage and cultural values are protected and celebrated

To create a new space or improve an existing one, it's important to start with a clear understanding of the design process, including:

  • engaging with the community and stakeholders
  • developing a brief
  • selecting a design team
  • designing the space
  • obtaining the necessary consents and authorities
  • construction
  • completion and handover
